About Steve Batey
My background as a business coach is a little unusual, I do not have any formal marketing qualifications, just a lot of experience in the real world. I have only worked for someone else for 9 months out of the last 26 years.
I was entrepreneurial at a young age, I had one paper round then a second, then was a milk boy, I sold my father’s home grown tomatoes creating quite a small we business over the summer. I was a mobile DJ starting as a 16 year old, having my own station wagon to carry all the equipment.
After a few years of employment and getting a trade, I ended up in business for myself, an unfortunate accident where I dislocated my shoulder made for some major changes. Instead of being the tradesman, I suddenly had to run the business with employees and contractors. This set me on a mission Of learning, of how to run a business, one that would work without me. I did course after course and all sorts of business subjects, marketing, sales, managing a business, I learnt how to read balance sheets and profit and loss statements, and soon my business was doing way better. things were going so well that I was asked to come back at speak at some of the courses I had been attending. This started my journey of “working on your business” and not just in your business.
Since then (and three shoulder operations later) i have had eight other businesses, I’ve helped many business, from start ups, and others that from fine tuning to major surgery. My one time in employment was involved in TV and Radio station, i learnt much about the media, marketing and advertising along with the other skills …
I’ve helped people get out of sticky cash-flow situations, one example was a potential client who worked out just 5 weeks before Christmas they would be unable to pay staff Holiday pay. Within 2 weeks, we had found a solution on how to free up over $15,000 hidden in the business, freeing up what the owner thought was junk, with an inexpensive promotional plan, a Sale was held, and had Cash in the bank within 18 days.
A city Pub so quiet on the weekdays, the overhead was was killings the profits from the weekend, we overcame this with some marketing of events, some promotions and attracted punters on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s filling the place and ensuring success.
I’ve helped sporting body lift its public profile, gain much PR and crowd success, front page newspaper coverage, TV One News as well as Close Up TV feature, An extended hour long Sports Radio interview, and then with a marketing, advertising and PR campaign including TV advertising – This grew a crowd size and exposure from barely 1,000 to over 6,000 spectators improving the sports exposure. This grew profit from the event over 700%
In the Point of Sale industry, we have helped over 3000 business get set up and established with POS and Business solutions. I’ve seen how some of these have performed well, and others who have failed, mainly through not seeking the best advice along the way.
I am very passionate about helping businesses succeed, I can’t stand to see a Business where things are going wrong, and maybe dying a slow death. Sometimes it’s as simple as… some advice, some guidance and working on fundamentals from someone with a bit more experience, – Things then could be so much different – More sales and more profits, improved Cash-flow along with the owner gaining more time not buried in their business.
I’m a family person at heart, support and coached children in sport. I’ve played sports in my younger years, football and softball being a representative player in both. I’m passionate about cars and motorsports, especially Hot Rodding and Drag Racing where i still compete.
